What is the Internet doing to our brains?

I believe that the Internet is changing the way our brains work. Our reality has greatly changed since the internet became such a huge part of our everyday lives. Before the internet we had to actually investigate things in books if we had questions regarding an unknown subject. It has become a normal and everyday practice to look things up on google so our brains are receiving a lot more information and at a much faster pace. I think this constant instant gratification is accustoming our brains to not only receive quick and easy access information, but because of this fast pace information retrieval we are not storing the information received in our long term memory. We are receiving so much information constantly but it does not stay with us, because we know that if we were to need that information again it is easily and readily available. I feel that our attention spans are also very short because we have become so used to receiving so much stimulus all of the time through our phones, that we must be entertained and connected at all times.

Copyright and Fair Use

What I understand by Copyright and fair use is that you must get permission to use copyright material. It will be considered fair use if you get the author's permission.

After reading and discussing more about Copyright and fair use I have learned that I need to change the way I use images primarily. I didn't know that as a teacher you could get sued for using images that have a copyright. I thought since the images were not being used to create revenue off of them, that it was permissible. Now I understand that these images with a copyright must be modified if I wish to use them in my classroom, or get permission from the company to use them.

What role should technology play in education?

In order to answer this question effectively and accurately, I would have to know in what respect am I answering the question? As a student or as a teacher? It would help to know which perspective I should take, the teacher's or the students'? There are some worrisome things regarding this question, like the idea of even having technology available to everyone. I don't believe that everyone has access to technology and this would make it quite difficult to work with. Definitely the downside of technology is the overuse and abuse of technology in our lives. We have become the mere extentions of the electronic devices that we own, and it begs to question if we own technology or if technology now own us?

What I find exciting about this idea is the great potential that it hold with it. There are so many new opportunities for learning using technology, that were never available before. The most exciting about technology to me is what is to come. We have such a long way from the old school overhead projectors that were used 20 years ago in the classroom, that I cannot wait to see what the future has in store for all of the future teachers.

I currently think that while technology is a great asset to education, OI can't help but wonder if in the future we will lose our love for books and the knowledge they bring us. I know that with the surgence of audio books it has become such an easy task to finish a whole book and gain knowledge on a particular theme or subject matter and it is exciting to think about how much more we could possibly learn if we are able to devour books of information so much quicker.

It has become so much easier to take notes in class and be able to research so many new concepts with just the magic of our fingertips. We are also able to carry thousands of books worth of information in one tiny device as our tablets, or laptops. They will take the place of our paper and pencil in the very near future as it becomes more readily available for everyone.
My understanding of plagiarism, besides "don't do it" is that you should be authentic with your printed work. If you use someone else's ideas or information you have to cite your source in order to give them credit for that information and or idea that you will be using. An idea that is confusing to me, would be, if you are creating something where you are using someone else's information in a video or a recording for example, do you also have to cite that source? and in what way?

After reading the paper on plagiarism I learned that there are many different forms of plagiarism. You don't necessarily have to be writing an essay in order to be plagiarizing an idea. You can also plagiarize someone else's mathematical expressions, It would also be plagiarism to copy someone else's artwork or computer coding. The bottom line is that you may use other people's information and ideas, you just can't pass them off as your own. You must give them the recognition they deserve whenever you are using ideas that are not your own.
